DURAND, Mich. (Mid Michigan Gazette) — Officials with the Shiawassee County Health Department (SCHD) recommend avoiding coming into full-body contact with the water in the Shiawassee River following a “Sanitary Sewer Overflow” (SSO) at the wastewater treatment plant within the City of Durand.
On Thursday, September 3, 2026, the overflow began after the area received 1.95 inches of rainfall within two hours. As a result, there was a discharge of partially treated wastewater, according to SCHD through a press release.
Plant officials estimate that approximately 110,000 gallons of partially treated sewage were discharged, according to SCHD.
As a precaution, SCHD is advising those who live within and around the area to avoid activities that may lead to full-body contact with the water in the Shiawassee River, like swimming.
