Mason’s Mayor Pro Tem Leon Clark resigns day after disputive meeting

MASON, Mich. (Mid Michigan Gazette) — The City of Mason’s Mayor Pro Tem Leon Clark has confirmed his resignation with the Mid Michigan Gazette.

This follows a disputed meeting of the Mason City Council on Monday night, where councilmembers voted in favor of tabling Ordinance 266, implementing a 90-day moratorium, and creating a citizen-advisory commission to assist with future regulation of data centers; an effort on the initiative that was brought forward by Clark.

The proposal of Ordinance 266 has been a topic of discussion for the past couple of months in Mason.

The initial efforts were posted to the City of Mason’s social media on Nov. 19 and are “designed to set clear standards for data centers and other advanced technology uses in Mason.” The amended proposal outlines requirements, including berm heights, building setbacks, fencing around the building, and more.

When asked about Clark’s resignation, Mayor Russell Whipple stated, “Yes. Mayor Pro Tem Clark resigned effective today.”

Following the adjournment of Monday night’s meeting, Mid Michigan Gazette saw Mason City Manager Deborah Stuart and Mayor Pro Tem Clark in a deep discussion for a handful of minutes. It was unclear what the two were discussing.

Mid Michigan Gazette reached out to Stuart’s office for comment, but has not heard back at this time.

This is a developing story.
