79-year-old man dead following car fire in Durand

DURAND, Mich. (Mid Michigan Gazette) — One man is dead following a one-vehicle crash in Durand on Thursday evening, according to the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said deputies responded to Brown Rd. north of Bennington Rd. on March 19, 2026, around 4:43 PM.

Law enforcement added that the crash occurred after a small model passenger vehicle traveling southbound on Brown Rd. drove off the road and into a field on the east side of the road. The vehicle continued to travel about 100 yards south alongside the shoulder of the field.

Authorities said the vehicle came to a stop after hitting a large tree and becoming fully engulfed in flames.

The driver, and only occupant, was a 79-year-old man from Vernon Township and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is under investigation; however, there are no signs of foul play according to the sheriff’s office.
