MSP vehicle involved in slew of crashes on Shiawassee County freeway

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, Mich. (Mid Michigan Gazette) — Icy road conditions caused multiple crashes on the freeway in Shiawassee County, including one that struck a Michigan State Police (MSP) patrol vehicle.

According to a social media post from the MSP, on Feb. 21, 2026, around 11:35 p.m., a Flint Post Trooper was parked on the shoulder of the roadway with their emergency vehicle lights in use while policing a traffic crash on eastbound I-69 east of Morrice Rd.

When the trooper returned to their patrol vehicle, a tractor-trailer lost control on the icy roadway and struck the MSP vehicle.

A Perry Fire Department fire truck was blocking the freeway while the patrol vehicle crash was being investigated when the fire truck was T-boned by another tractor-trailer at around 2:30 a.m.

“Luckily, the semi was able to slow down enough to only cause minor damage to the fire truck,” the social media post said. “One firefighter sustained minor injuries.”

A third tractor-trailer ran off the road in the area of the incidents as well, which caused further delay in opening the freeway. The roadway has been reopened since then at around 7:00 a.m.

MSP officials are reminding drivers to slow down and watch out for iced-over roadways.
