Byron’s New Lothrop Road bridge replacement work begins in spring of 2027

BYRON, Mich. (Mid Michigan Gazette) — The Shiawassee County Road Commission confirmed with the Mid Michigan Gazette that the New Lothrop Road bridge, between Bath Road and Lehring Road in Byron, will have work start in the spring of 2027 for replacement.

The bridge was “closed indefinitely” on Aug. 2, 2023, due to the condition of the bridge worsening.

Drivers were told the detour route is from Bath Road to Byron Road to Miller Road to Durand Road.

“The beams underneath the bridge rotted away and deteriorated,” Managing Director for Shiawassee County Road Commission Chris Cannon told the Mid Michigan Gazette.

Cannon added that on Oct. 22, 2025, the bridge on New Lothrop Road was chosen to be replaced.

“It all comes down to funding,” he said. “There’s only so much money to go around for bridges.”

The official added that the bridge will cost roughly $3 million to replace and will take most of the summer of 2027 to work on, with hopes to finish it around three to four months following the start of construction.
